A Man. A Woman. Just Friends?:

CAN men and women be friends? We have been asking ourselves that question for a long time, and the answer is usually no. The movie “When Harry Met Sally…” provides the locus classicus. The problem, Harry famously explains, is that “the sex part always gets in the way.” Heterosexual people of the opposite sex may claim to be just friends, the message goes, but count on it — wink, wink, nudge, nudge — something more’s going on. Popular culture enforces the notion relentlessly. In movie after movie, show after show, the narrative arc is the same. What starts as friendship (Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler) ends up in bed.

Project Glass

After watching the video for Google’s Project Glass, I gotta agree with Stephen Hackett here:

I’m officially freaked out.

You interact with Glass by speaking, mostly. I’m not sure about you, but I prefer not to stand around interacting with Glass on the inside, while looking like I’m talking to myself on the outside. People generally tend to take the talking-to-yourself as a symptom or even result of mental insanity, or something about being mental.

As Glass dips its finger in augmented reality, it would need to alter two of your senses: sight and hearing. Sight is simple enough: a small projector to the side of your head. But where will the image be projected? There’s no background static enough to project an image on. And it would be obvious to other people you’re using Glass when it’s projecting some sort of image.

I imagine Google would provide you with a pair of earphones that are somehow connected to their glasses so that you can hear your notifications pop up. I wonder how people will try and not look like they’ve been scared out of their wits when a stray notification pops up out of nowhere.

Connectivity issues would be a major obstacle in pushing Glass out the door: WiFi or 3G/4G/nG for all n belonging to the positive integers? I assume if you go the nG route, there would be some monthly fees to go with this, whilst WiFi would be completely free but extremely limiting. The video shows the guy snapping a photo and then sharing it – an obvious display of internet capabilities on Glass’s part. And what about speed? What if you’re in the subway twenty feet below ground? How would that affect your interactions with Glass? Would it be affected? How about a total disconnect?

Like I said, Glass really scares me. Not just the glasses themselves, which to me, looks really android-like. Also reminds me of the HUD systems that Vegeta had. But also being able to pinpoint your own location, and someone else’s. That’s taking stalking opportunities to a whole new level.

You can print a document directly from the Finder without having to manually open its parent application. This may seem obvious, but enough folks seemed to not know about it when I asked around.

You simply need to select a document in the Finder and hit ⌘-P, or just select Print from the Finder’s File menu.

The document’s native app will open it and send it to the printer, then promptly close. Third-party apps may require you to manually approve printer settings, but Apple’s own apps (like Preview) will send the job right along its way!

Editor’s note: This seems like one of those clever-but-unsung features that’s been around for a while, perhaps even from the pre-OS X era. Anyone know when exactly it showed up?

I don’t know when exactly this feature showed up, but the standard shortcut key only popped up in 10.7. Way better than heading to the menu and selecting the Print command in 10.6.

I Won But Lost Just Because:

I excitedly thought I won out of pure luck. However, I was quickly told that I lost. I asked for a reason and was told Windows Phone won because “it displays the weather right there.” That was rather unclear. I showed her my device which also was showing off the same information with two side-by-side weather widgets on the center home screen. After pressing for a better reason, I was told that Windows Phone won “just because.”

A rather dickish, and unprofessional move. Microsoft is already pretty down the list, and this just kicked it a few spots down. Don’t treat your customers, or potential customers with disrespect. Don’t beat them down and make them feel crappy. That’s a surefire method of making sure that person never visits the Microsoft Store ever again.

I sure hope the purpose of this marketing ploy is to attract new customers by demonstrating the highlights of Windows Phone, not frustrating them instead.

If this was the true purpose behind the “contest”, then Microsoft really needs to work harder. It’s definitely backfired, and it could even turn people against Microsoft. I can see how being beaten by the company’s product could make people want the product, but only if the company’s product actually beats its competition fair and square. Win with honor, lose with dignity.

On Typos and Errors

I tend to be more forgiving to the average person screwing up a loose/lose proposition. Writers, however, do not get a free pass on this one. It’s like an accountant not knowing the difference between subtraction and division. It’s like a pilot not knowing the landing gear should be down for landing. And while the consequences of poor grammar cannot be equated to a pile of aluminum on the runway, in terms of professionalism and advancing a writing career the implications are the same.

It bugs me any time I have to fix a typo here on 512 Pixels. When I have to correct a grammatical mistake, however, it kills me.
