Concept: Mac App Updates

Mac App Update Concept

Lennart Ziburski didn’t like the way app updates are served currently so he set out to redraw the entire process.

The result is beautiful. But the only thing I don’t like about it is the inability to dismiss the update all together – the update notification is going to sit up there until you update the app. I don’t always feel the need to update an app to the latest version, mainly because they only contain certain fixes or localization improvements. Since there’s no way to dismiss this notification, it will quickly become an annoyance as it constantly nags you to update.

How will it deal with subsequent updates? For example, I’m running Kickoff 1.2, and an update for 1.3 comes along but I don’t want to update just yet. I can’t make the notification go away, so it stays there. Then an update for 1.4 becomes available while I’m working in the app. Does it display an additional notification next to the previous one? Or does it pop up a notification window? But because I’ve seen the update to 1.3, I would assume that the pop up window would also be a little reminder about 1.3. So I quickly escape it and I’ve never known that 1.4 was available. Choice of wording is interesting, but I think the version number of the app should present, I can tell when a 3 becomes a 4 or when a major update is available.
