Finer Things in Mac: Quickly undo Lion's... →
finermac:
Lion gained a spelling correction feature from iOS that many people find… annoying, to be polite about it. Now, OS X has long underlined misspelled words in red while you write in almost any application. But taking a cue from its lil’ i-brother, Lion will autocorrect some words and replace the red…

Writing Assignment #1
Writing Assignments are just short bits of text I (hopefully) will write on a near-daily basis about daily things. Nothing much to them but raw, unadulterated, unedited text straight from the cranium. Enjoy!
The correct way to store an opened bottle of ketchup is to refrigerate it. Ketchup should always be cooled, never warm. Warm ketchup is disgusting. Cold ketchup always complements food best....

So LG makes the Optimus Vu, and there’s this picture… No explanation needed.

Earlier, via @viticci, I saw a tweet from @marcedwards that said: Retina 27” Thunderbolt display: 5120×2880 = 14,745,600 px 4K film: 4096×2160 = 8,847,360 px Retina iPad 3: 2048×1536 = 3,145,728 px
This is based on the widely-held but fallacious belief that a “Retina display” is twice…

Changing TextMate's Line-Height
Discovered this from FredHQ today:
$ defaults write com.macromates.Textmate OakLineHeightDelta 2
This nifty Terminal command will change the line-height in TextMate to make it easier to read. Instead of 2, I like to make it 5.

An Even Better iPhone Mute Switch
Justin French suggests a smarter mute switch:
What about this: When the iPhone is in “silent” mode, all alarms start off with vibration only. After a minute or so, the audio gradually fades in, increasing to full volume over the course of another two minutes.
I find it highly interesting that Apple hasn’t done this. This isn’t a new idea; my old phone had this functionality, and...

I Can't Hear You
Some people just don’t know who to approach and who not to approach when looking for help. They would walk up to the nearest person who’s on the phone and bombard them with queries best handled by Google Maps. And they wonder why they get ignored. The talking-on-the-phone thing is a sign telling other people to not disturb them. And it’s the same with those of us who like to...

Create a New Text File in Alfred
I’ve created my own extension in Alfred today that basically creates a new text file on your desktop and opens it in TextEdit (because everyone has that).
Download the extension here.
Customizing
The script that does all the magic:
cd ~/Desktop
touch {query}.txt
open {query}.txt
All it does is navigate to your desktop, creates and then opens a .txt file with a name you give it....
On Comparing Low-distraction Browser Readers
Dave Caolo recently compared three in-browser readers: Safari’s built in reader, Instapaper’s text bookmarklet and Evernote Clearly. He loves Evernote Clearly. I think there’s one more contender here, and Dave’s mentioned it briefly: Readability. And here’s why.
Readability started off as a side project of Arc90, as a bookmarklet. Now it’s become an...
On Waking Up at 5am to Code
Matt Greer:
It’s 5am and I will be also putting in a full day’s work afterwards. Not being stressed out or frustrated during this time is essential. I ensure this by working on truly personal projects that interest me and I have complete control over. I’m only two weeks in but so far no signs of getting worn out, in fact quite the opposite. It’s been pretty invigorating.
Because of my...

Than
I would rather be in a field of tall grass,
Swaying in the wind, a dolphin dashing,
Gay amongst its friends and diving through,
A baby swaddled, let not any cry be heard,
Cozy by the fireplace, on a wintry night
With a hot chocolate and well-worn book,
Or marrying a quill with paper, drafting prose
More beautiful than the night skies, than
A panther, ensnared in its own pursuit,
A whale...

My friends Stephen Revesz, Zackary Corbett and I are pleased to announce Ampersand. Taking after The Brothers’ Weekly, which unfortunately seems to be dead, Ampersand is a bi-weekly digest of designer news, by designers.

How To Dismiss Banner Notifications In iOS 5 →
I never knew you could dismiss those banners, if I saw this earlier, I wouldn’t have waited all the time for them to dismiss themselves. Swipe right to left, or you can fling it back up like a slingshot. Nice touch, Apple, if it weren’t so well hidden.

Everything I was led to believe in CORE training four years ago has become nullified; Apple is no longer about enriching lives, it is about enriching pocketbooks.
Whilst I haven’t been to an actual Apple retail store, just seeing this is saddening. And it’s not written by a customer, but a former employee.

Concept: Mac App Updates
Lennart Ziburski didn’t like the way app updates are served currently so he set out to redraw the entire process.
The result is beautiful. But the only thing I don’t like about it is the inability to dismiss the update all together – the update notification is going to sit up there until you update the app. I don’t always feel the need to update an app to the latest version,...

A New Calendar for 2012
Browsing Dribbble early in the morning on the first day of 2012 lead me to this, a calendar designed to help you get stuff done. It’s fucking awesome.
Designer Caleb Greene explains it:
And so, for the start of 2012, I’ve designed a calendar. This calendar is an attempt to help me, and hopefully you, do that; to establish habits and patterns that will help us reap long-term successes....
